12k take JEE Advanced test in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: While many students writing their Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced papers on Sunday found the chemistry and mathematics questions tough, the change in the marking pattern also created confusion among the aspirants.
The results of the JEE Advanced exam will be declared on June 23. Some of the students complained that the change in the paper pattern confused them. They said that the physics questions were easier than what they had expected, whereas chemistry was little difficult.

The examinees said that the number of questions carrying negative marking was much higher than previous years. This year, there were 65-75 per cent questions which had negative marks. Also, there was negative marking in multiple choice and single choice questions as well.

Some students from the state regretted that they could not attempt 25 per cent of the questions as several questions in the mathematics section were time consuming.

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced examination was taken by 1.5 lakh engineering aspirants. Aspirants taking JEE Advanced can seek admissions to Bachelors in Engineering, BTech and architecture courses at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), Delhi Technological University, and other centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs).

In Gujarat, about 11,900 students took their examination from Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat. In Ahmedabad, the examination was conducted at 10 institutes across the city. Over the past five years, there has been a considerable increase in the number of students taking the IIT examination now known as JEE.

JEE Main qualifiers were required to fall in the Top 20 percentile of their respective boards for taking the JEE Advanced exam. Data from the IITs shows that a little over 18 per cent of the total students are female.
