For the first time in the IIT's history, two women have cracked the top-10 barrier. The results, which will be announced after 5 pm today, have two women candidates, one from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, AIR (All India Rank) 6th and another one from Tirupati , Andhra Pradesh, AIR-8th, who are among the top ten candidates.

"This is the first time in IIT's history that we have women in the top-10 of the merit list," says Prof H C Gupta, organising chairman, JEE (Advanced)-2013, Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi

Of the 1.5 lakh students who appeared for JEE-Advanced, for admission into IIT and some other centrally funded institutes, 21,110 students have qualified for 9885 seats across these institutions.

Of these, 2,392 are women candidates. A candidate needs to score a minimum of 10% marks in each section of the two papers of the exam and overall 35%. Not all who qualify get a berth at these institutes but are a part of the extended merit list and get a chance for counselling and admissions only when the top scorers drop off the list.

Some 14,336 students will be called for counselling out of the 21,110 for counselling starting June 24.

Last year, about 5.07 lakh students had applied for IIT-JEE (a single exam format) for a total of 9,647 seats are available across 17 institutes, including the IITs, IT-BHU Varanasi and ISM Dhanbad.

This year, for the first time, the format has undergone a change with two exams, JEE-Main and JEE-Advanced along with an weightage on the academics for admissions into the IITs.
