KOLKATA: The first two ranks of IIT-JEE (advanced), the results for which were published on Friday, were brought out on Friday. The first two ranks were bagged by students from IIT-Chennai region. The topper is Sai Sandeep Reddy and the second position has been bagged by Ravi Chandra.
Among the top 100 ranks, thirty six candidates from IIT-Chennai region found a place in the top 100 which was followed by IIT-Delhi region with 25 students among the top 100. From IIT-Bombay zone, 17 students ranked in the top 100. IIT-Kharagpur came fourth with 10 positions. The fifth place was bagged by IIT-Kanpur zone with six candidates in the top 100. From IIT-Roorkee zone five students and from IIT-Guwahati zone 1 student bagged positions within the first 100 ranks.
"In IIT-JEE (advanced), two girls made it to the top 10, among them one is from Madhya Pradesh and another from Tirupati. The enrolment of girls has also gone up from last year. The fee waiver scheme for girls, introduced from 2012, is bearing fruits. This year there were 14,157 candidates who appeared from IIT-Kharagpur zone among total candidates of 1,30,000," said vice-chairman of IIT-JEE (Kharagpur), S K Pal.
The topper from IIT-Kharagpur zone was bagged by a student from Ranchi who ranked 9 in IIT-JEE (advance). The top ranker from Kolkata is Rohan Das is the topper from Kolkata with an all-India rank of 51.
He has ranked fourth in WBJEE and now wants to study computer science and engineering in IIT-Delhi. "I love to study physics and solve mathematical problems. Computer science is my favourite. I had dreamt of studying in one of the IITs. But I never expected to score such a good rank. Now that I have, it makes me feel jubilant," the topper from Kolkata says, adding that there is no shortcut to achieve success. In IIT-JEE or any other JEE a student has to study well. It is no point taking the examination half-heartedly. Even I had worked very hard to achieve this success. Sometimes I have devoted even 16 to 17 hours in a day to studying."
This student of St Lawrence High School is not afraid of taking on the world. "My mantra was to face the competition. There are a lot of coaching centres offering tuitions. The mock tests should be taken seriously. The results of the mock tests must be compared and if fared poor, a student will have to concentrate more. There is no point taking unnecessary stress and attend a lot of coaching classes. They do not help anymore since IIT-JEE, as well as WBJEE, have changed the pattern of questions. They are now more interested to know the knowledge gathered by the student and rot learning do not help"
"My son was never among the toppers in school. However, I have helped him in his studies since I was a student of BESU and knew that he would score well in all competitive exams. After becoming an engineer, I would not want Rohan to take up a marketing job but would rather suggest him to do research work since he is good in his academics. Foreign shores are not lucrative as I believe good education can be received in India too," said Rathindra Nath Das, Rohan's father.
Rohan had taken part in other competitive examinations as well. "In KVIP his rank was 189. It was followed by a score of 90.6% in Higher Secondary Examinations. He has cracked ISI-Kolkata and his name is in the first list. In WBJEE his rank is fourth," added his father.
